Batik Paintings

Next lesson.......

Batik (/ˈbætɪk/ or /bəˈtk/; Javanese pronunciation: [ˈbateʔ]; Indonesian: [ˈbatɪk]) is a cloth that is traditionally made using a manual wax-resist dyeing technique.
Javanese traditional batik, especially from Yogyakarta and Surakarta, has notable meanings rooted to the Javanese conceptualization of the universe. Traditional colours include indigo, dark brown, and white, which represent the three major Hindu Gods (Brahmā, Vishnu, and Śiva). This is related to the fact that natural dyes are most commonly available in indigo and brown. Certain patterns can only be worn by nobility; traditionally, wider stripes or wavy lines of greater width indicated higher rank. Consequently, during Javanese ceremonies, one could determine the royal lineage of a person by the cloth he or she was wearing.
Other regions of Indonesia have their own unique patterns that normally take themes from everyday lives, incorporating patterns such as flowers, nature, animals, folklore or people. The colours of pesisir batik, from the coastal cities of northern Java, is especially vibrant, and it absorbs influence from the Javanese, Arab, Chinese and Dutch cultures.

Drawing the Face!

A special shout out to all of you who came to the Fine Arts Fair and especially those of you who helped me.  THANK YOU so much!  You all Rock!  It was a huge success thanks to you all.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

The key to being successful at drawing people and facial features is PRACTICING.  Think about what makes us good at what we do-we PRACTICE. You are not going to draw the face the first time and it will turn out wonderful, but after drawing several faces and features you will see improvement.

STAY POSITIVE and DON'T GIVE UP!

Let's get up close and personal.  And pay close attention to the shapes and curves that make your facial features different then other peoples.  We are gong to start this unit off with practicing drawing each facial feature separate several times.  Once I see that you are feeling comfortable with those we will then move onto putting the facial features into an actual face layout.

Lets begin with EYES:

Warm/Cool Color Assessment

Now that you have completed your 3rd painting in Art 2, tell me what you think your strengths overall are and what you think you need to work on when it comes to painting.  Did you get better in the area that I told you to work on?  I would also like you to tell me one thing that you would like to do  this semester in Art 2.  Go onto the internet and research something that you would like to do and then paste a link to an example of what you would like to do in your post and also explain what aspect you would like to do in Art 2.

Keep Working!

                                                           Hi Everyone,

Happy Valentines Day!  Sorry I am out today, I will be back tomorrow.  Please continue working on your new paintings.  One thing I noticed a lot yesterday was that everyone was going away from showing me a range of dark to light in each section.  One of my main goals for this assignment is that NO sections are a solid color.  If you need help and want to wait until I get back to help you on Friday that is fine.  Use class time as a study hall if that is the case.

See you all on Friday,
Mrs. Schneid

Descriptive Word Art

So for this next assignment you will be choosing one word from the box up front to base your entire artwork on.  So if your word is "MYSTICAL" you will think of something that you believe represents the word MYSTICAL.  And everyone can take there own spin on the word, as words mean several different things when used in different contexts.  You may do any of the following for your artwork:

*Find an image on the Internet that represents your word to draw out.
*Think up and draw something from your head that represents your word and then draw it out from memory or use some visual references as needed.
*Get images (from home or around the classroom) to draw that represent your word.
*Walk around and take a picture of something that represents your word and then print it and draw it out.

MY EXAMPLE: So if my word is Mystical-I might find a picture of something from Salvidor Dali's style of art (as he is my favorite artist) and then try to use his same style but use a different image to create something similar to what he did.  If you want to be able to call the art 100% your own you need to learn to start "not copying exactly what you see on the internet" and instead changing it at least 40%.  Kind of a rule of thumb you should try to go by in art.

Monochromatic Still Life

1.  Choose 3 items from up front.
2.  Draw them clumped together on your page-NOT IN THE CENTER.
3.  Going off  the edge of the paper helps make your composition more interesting.
4.  Then draw out a line or patterned background.
5.  Then choose 1 color plus Black and White and begin mixing colors to show me TINTS and SHADES of your color throughout your artwork.
6.  The objects should show smooth value transitions-the backgrounds can show a solid color with different ranges of color throughout.

Assessing B&W Painting

Answer the following questions below under comments in full sentences.  Please be honest and follow the guidelines for each question.  Assessments are intended to help your reflect on what you have created to help you get better on your future assignments, giving you a focus to think about.

 1.  Tell me what you think your strengths are after completing your first painting assignment.  Please be detailed in your response-meaning tell me why you feel this was your strength-don't just say 'just because'.

2.  What is your own personal goal for the next painting assignment?  And tell me how you think you can go about achieving your goal.

3.  Looking at one other piece that is already in the sculpture upfront, I want you to describe one of the pieces that you like using at least 3 art terms.  There is a list of art terms on my from chart if you need help.  Think about some of the terms I used throughout this lesson, like value, smooth flow, etc.
